Construction
Earthworks have remained the principle activity on site, with work progressing well over the last month since our previous update.

In June over 300,000m3 of soil was moved by the approximately 70 items of plant we currently have operating on site.   None of this material has left the site and our aim remains to transport as little excavated material from the site as possible as part of our commitment to reducing HGV movements on local roads.

The plot for DSV Group’s buildings has now been fully formed and the plateaus for the remaining JLR units are in progress.  We have also started creating some of the landscaping ‘bunds’, or mounds, around the site that will help to screen the buildings.

North West Leicestershire District Council has recently approved our Employment Scheme (Construction Phase), and we are proactively engaging with our supply chain and other partners to deliver against the commitments made in the Scheme.  A copy of the document is now available on our project website here (via the Project Documents tab).  We have had some early success, accommodating a local Appleby Magna resident seeking a part time role on site.  We hope to share more of this and other success stories as we progress.

Water management and drainage
As part of the programme of earthworks, two large permanent balancing ponds have been excavated together with some additional temporary water storage ponds.  These ponds are being used to store run off water which will then be treated and discharged into the water courses at a controlled rate, as and when required.  Currently the stored water is being used when necessary for dust suppression during drier periods.

Work on the site’s underground drainage network began in early July, which will see us excavating trenches and installing almost 5km of underground pipes up to 1.8m in diameter.  This will include a sophisticated system of penstock valves to each plot, meaning that water can be stored in the pipes in the event of a storm.

We also recently met with two of the site’s immediate neighbours (Busby’s Strawberry Farm and Park Farm) to discuss our broader construction programme and boundary matters, including water management and flood risk mitigation.  We have agreed to maintain a regular dialogue.

Community Fund
The Leicestershire and Rutland Community Foundation held their first webinar a few weeks ago to provide additional information for groups interested in applying for grants from the Mercia Park Community Fund.

This was well attended by over a dozen groups and organisations and provided an opportunity for the team to answer questions covering an array of themes from decision making process to the application form itself.

Please do continue to share details about the Community Fund with any interested local groups – the link to the Community Foundation’s site which includes all of the necessary information about how to apply is available here: www.llrcommunityfoundation.org.uk/apply-for-funds/

With the continued easing of the Government’s lockdown measures we are hopeful that a further CLG meeting will be possible later this year, however for the time being we will continue to share regular updates via email.

As before, if you have any questions about construction-related activity or queries regarding anything you have seen on site, please contact the site team directly by calling 01604 678 960.

Alternatively, for non-construction related enquiries please email us using this address (info@merciaparkconstruction.co.uk) and do continue to let me know if you have any questions about any of the above.
