Please find below an update on the Leicestershire County Council’s Superfast Leicestershire programme.
Superfast Leicestershire Update
Over the last six years, the County Council led Superfast Leicestershire programme has provided 75,000 homes and businesses with access to superfast broadband for the first time.
Earlier this year saw the completion of the second phase of our fibre broadband rollout, with superfast coverage reaching 96% of the city and county. Behind the scenes we have also been working on the next stages of the programme, seeking delivery partners to provide upgraded coverage to the final 4% of the county who remain without adequate broadband service.
Prior to launching a procurement process, the Council undertook extensive engagement with potential delivery partners. Feedback and government recommendations required that that county be divided into two parts along east and west lines.
The council is pleased to share the news that after careful consideration, BT have successfully secured the contract for the delivery of high-speed broadband in the western side of the county. Almost 3,000 properties are set to benefit over the next two years in the first stage of deployment, with additional coverage being planned.
Unfortunately, during this round of bidding, the council did not receive a suitable offer for the eastern side of the county and were therefore unable to appoint a delivery partner.
We remain committed to ensuring that everyone has access to the broadband speeds that they need and will shortly be launching a Public Consultation for the next stage of the programme which will focus exclusively on east Leicestershire. This consultation will confirm our understanding of which properties have poor digital connectivity and require our help. We will then launch a new multi-million pound procurement to secure upgrades for homes and business across the east of Leicestershire.
There are also a range of new government schemes and initiatives that may be suitable for your area. These could provide solutions for areas where we don’t yet have plans in place to reach as well as areas who are interested in moving from superfast to gigabit capable access. To find out more, get in touch with a member of the Council’s Broadband Team at broadband@leics.gov.uk or on 0116 305 0023.
Updates on the rollout in the west and plans for the east are available on our website or through our regular news bulletin which you can sign up to at www.superfastleicestershire.org.uk/register-for-notifications
